I set up the Jim Hamilton Rugby Academy to give kids the opportunity to play and be coached in a game that has given me so many happy memories. I believe Rugby is the ultimate team sport and regardless of your ability and size it can offer fulfilment and fun. I firmly believe that sport gives kids the foundation to be better people.
The Academy provides opportunities for young rugby players to experience a safe, fun and enjoyable environment, in the hands of experienced coaches, whilst being coached in the fundamental skills of the game.
Players are rotated through coaches in small groups, to ensure there is sufficient time for individual attention and in order to cover the different aspects of the game. We want young players to learn, however the focus is on enjoyment and putting the skills learned into practice via small conditioned games.
I will be present at all the camps and will be assisted by high level coaches. Previous attendees have included Scotland captain, Greig Laidlaw, Saracens and England fly half Charlie Hodgson, Gloucester stars Peter Buxton, Nick Wood and Henry Purdy, together with Premiership Academy coaches and former England U16 and Under 18 coaches.
The Academy is co-run by former Gloucester back row, Larry Cummins. Larry also played out in Australia for 5 seasons and then turned his attention to coaching. He was a school director of rugby and coached Gloucestershire U18, South West Schools U18, England U16A and England U18. Larry remains a Gloucester fan but also supports Saracens because I told him to!
What do you get at a camp?
Not only will you get the opportunity to experience a great day of rugby, at the camps you will receive a complimentary rugby ball and t- shirt or beanie. You may have the chance to win 2 tickets to a Premiership match and will be able to question the rugby stars present and to obtain autographs and “selfies.” Parents, you can ask questions and of course have photos taken as well.
Camps can be made customised as well. We can provide expert strength and conditioning and nutritional advice through people who work in the professional game and also run specific clinics whether it be Scrummaging, Line outs and goal kicking.
